报告内容

Titanium oxide (TiO2) nanomaterials have attracted growing interests for applications in energy conversion and storage applications (e.g., photovoltaics, water splitting, photocatalysis, hydrogen storage, and Li-ion batteries) due to their optical/electrochemical properties, chemical/environmental stability, and cost effectiveness. In this talk, I will present our studies on one-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanostructures prepared by electrospinning technique for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) applications. 1D TiO2 nanofibers and the composite of TiO2 nanofibers/nanoparticles were evaluated as photoanodes of DSSCs. The charge transport and recombination in the photoanodes were characterized by the dark current, photovoltage as a function of light intensity, and transient photovoltage and photocurrent measurements. The results indicate that the addition of 1D TiO2 nanostructures into the photoanodes leads to substantial reduction of electron recombination and improvement of the charge collection efficiency. This is due to highly crystalline grains with fewer grain boundaries in 1D TiO2 nanostructures as observed in structural characterizations. Further, flexible and high-temperature durable photoanode based on a hybrid mat of the TiO2/SiO2 nanofibers impregnated with TiO2 nanoparticles was developed.  In the flexible photoanode, the TiO2 nanoparticles enhance the dye loading, the TiO2 nanofibers improve the electron transport, and the SiO2 nanofibers provide the mechanical strength/flexibility. The DSSC based on this composite photoanode achieves a power conversion efficiency of 6.74 ± 0.33% on FTO/glass substrate. The freestanding composite mat of TiO2 nanoparticles and electrospun TiO2/SiO2 nanofibers, as well as the preparation methods, not only is ideal for flexible DSSCs, but also can be applied for a broad range of flexible and low-cost energy conversion devices.
