报告摘要:

Carbon is the key element of life and is also becoming increasingly important in our technological world. Many existing and future applications rely on carbons with very specific and controllable properties. These include bulk applications such as water filtration and soil improvement through to high-tech material like platinum-free catalysts for fuel-cells or transparent conducting films for photovoltaics. In all areas of carbon research and development, there is a common challenge: how can we produce carbons with increasingly complex structure and surface properties while also minimizing cost and environmental impact? The answer surely lies in the combination of renewable biomass resources with some ingenious chemistry.

报告人简介:

Zoe Schnepp completed a PhD with Professor Stephen Mann at the University of Bristol in 2009. She then held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Colloids and interfaces in Germany before moving to the National Institute for Materials Science in Japan. Here, she was awarded an independent postdoctoral fellowship in the International Center for Young Scientists. In 2012, she returned to the UK as a Birmingham Fellow (Lecturer in Chemistry). Her research focus is the creation of functional nanomaterials from renewable resources. In particular, she is interested in using biomass to produce sustainable catalysts for various applications, such as energy generation and transfer (see recent review paper in Z.
